Now you know about The Gears and you know how to use 1st and 2nd. Our final bit of packing today concerns the power of 3rd Gear.
There are some people who find it very easy to step back and look at things from a very detached perspective; they have no trouble shifting into 3rd Gear.
Think about it ~ there are are some professions that require the ability to shift into 3rd Gear on a regular basis, since an objective perspective is a fundamental aspect of the job. For a scientist, engineer, pilot, lawyer, accountant or financial adviser to consider their data from any other perspective would seem completely illogical to them.
And if this sounds a bit like Mr. Spock, right now, that’s great. This is the Gear that he was famous for using. If you can imagine Spock as the poster child for 3rd Gear, it will be clear that there are benefits to this Gear as well. This is the Gear that you want to be able to access when you want to stay cool under pressure.
Remember that pilot, Sully Sullenburger, who landed US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River in January 2009, without a single loss of life? He and his crew had to be completely in 3rd Gear to pull that off.
The ability to shift into 3rd Gear when you need to will allow you to see the ‘Big Picture” anytime you want; 3rd Gear is your access to logic without emotion.
Human beings are hard-wired to feel with emotion and think with logic. We’re the only creatures on the planet who have the ability to detach from our emotions and think things through from an objective perspective. We need both our emotion and our logic to be successful in life. We need all three Gears ~ there is no one Gear that’s perfect for every situation.
- 1st Gear allows you to identify your beliefs, values, opinions and experiences and share them with others.
- 2nd Gear allows you to be curious about someone else’s 1st Gear, so you can walk a mile in their shoes. It’s the only Gear that allows you to listen.
- 3rd Gear allows you to get a clear idea of what you’re facing, without getting clouded by emotion. It allows you to see the bigger picture and consider all sides of the issue.
It’s your willingness to shift Gears that will allow you to travel on your Journey to Powerful Presence with the greatest amount of flexibility and resourcefulness. You never know what you’re going to run into as you travel through your life. Having three Gears to work with means that you have the greatest amount of choice, no matter where you are or what you’re doing.
