Day 8 ~ Chop Wood, Carry Water

There’s a Buddhist saying, “Before enlightenment: chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.”
The message I get here is that no matter what great things you are up to as you discover and develop your Powerful Presence, everything else in your life still exists.
If this journey was like a movie, you could escape from your life and focus just on the task you’ve set for yourself. Since it’s not, you have to integrate what you’re working on into everything else you do; you have to pay attention to your yeses and nos even more strategically.
Now you have something else at stake.
After a week of excitement and exhilaration about what I’m up to with this book and this 12-week process, I can see the “everydayness” that’s required here. Not the hoopla and the fanfare that most beginnings involve – just the steady pace of step-by-step to cover the distance you’ve set for yourself.
I realized this morning why I get up at 4 AM – it’s because I need those two solitary hours to get grounded and say yes to myself before I leap into my day. I truly am a morning person; I can tell the difference today that I “slept in” this morning until 6 AM.
Although the day was wonderful and productive and I spent it doing things I really care about  – I felt the loss of that pre-dawn time that feeds my soul.
So if this journey is a learning process, I got quite an education today. As I shift my focus to writing this book and the next one, I have to shift the focus of my yeses and nos.
It’s all about awareness and attention. It’s like waking up from a dream of driving and realizing that your hands are really on the wheel.
